My care for abandoned cats started in the early 1992 inspired by my overhearing a conversation of some people living in a family house bordering an abandoned piece of land. I heard them bet 300 crowns between themselves on how long would it take for two kittens (not older than 2 months) and their mother to die. I decided to thwart their bet. In the evening, I climbed over the fence with food and drink and put it all at the place where I had seen the cat family. Back home, I could both see and hear from my balcony the whole trio gobbling. A few days later I was already expected at the fence at a certain hour and after about 10 days the kittens were already willing to let me caressing them. Still later, I was given consent from the owner of the land to enter it. There were a big barn and 2 sheds and 2 garages there. The plot was fenced and there were trees and bushes. The mother of the kittens (a black-and-white cat) disappeared after a time; the other kitten Babuška (with white colour prevailing on black) endowed me with a flight of kittens. The betters from the family house started hating me and the number of homeless cats on „our plot“ started growing …. So that’s how my „cat-related“ career began. Until June 2006, when I became member of the Society, I provided care for about 36 cats on three localities (gardens, abandoned parcels, and a residence area with family houses in a peaceful area of the town little frequented by people in the evenings). Soon after, I found home for two white-grey castrated, vaccinated and worm-liberated cats at at an acquaintance of mine in Opava, who had a nice homestead. Then I went to see them to check if they’re alright – they were . Of 34 cats there were 19 females and 15 males, apart from 6 already neutered cats. Till end of summer, all underwent neutering. Aged between 9 months up to 12 years, most of them experienced torture and maltreatment by man: their ears teared off, their tails chopped, their fur behind their necks torn out and bearing evidence of cigarette burns. They sufferred from malnutrition and diseases (cat’s cold, auricular scabies). First I built shelters for the cats in various barns, sheds, and haylofts, always first provided consent of respective owners. Every day at an hour and at a place, I was already expected to come and feed them. The boarders were lining up at the sites. They got dishes with food containing raw meat with entails or canned meat, and granulled feed. After dinner, there was time for caressing and fondling. Then the cats did their cleanup and left for their respective homes. In summer, I started feeding them at about 9 a.m and ended after 11:30. After I had let the garden and built warm-insulated sheds with beds, closets and climbing poles in there, I do not have to rampage with the fodder from one place to another. Still, people throw their adult and junior cats they do not want over the fence. Well, at least there’s someone who’ll take care of them providing them veterinary care and sufficient food. My food for cats is based upon chicken hash meat taken directly from the manufacturer (at CZK 15 per 1 kg; the normal price is 20 and above) and completed with canned food, curd cheese and dry food. If the cat gourmets do not get their hashed chicken meat, they give me a deprecatory look. They are not much into canned or dry food. If I fed them e.g. with cheap 800g cans, I would need at least 8 cans i.e. CZK 160-180 per evening. The way I do it, it adds up to about CZK 50-60 a day. Today, they are all more then well-fed, and besides vaccinated and freed from flees and worms. The adult cats are neutered/spayed and provided with all necessary veterinary care if they are ill or injured. I find new homes for adult and junior cats born to cats thrown out from homes or to stray cats. Adoptions are based upon a binding Agreement entered into with good people living in family houses or flats. I do it in person or via various acquaintances, and through advertisement newspapers, e.g. widely read “AVÍZO” for the whole of West Moravia; reagional advertisement newspaper“ZIKADO”, ads in tobacco shops and vet surgeries and on notice boards; and placing the offer of cats at www.kockaapravo.cz and www.kocky-online.cz. After placing the cats, I make regular inspections. For the whole period of my activity I had only to take back two kittens. My kittens and cats have found homes throughout the country, e.g. in Brno, Náměšť n. Oslavou, Přerov, Prostějov, Nový Jičín, Opava, Příbor, Kopřivnice, Frýdek-Místek, Opava - venkov, Ostrava, Karviná, Orlová, Mošnov, Skorotín, Petřvald, Chlebovice and Kujavy. Just visiting homes takes a lot of time and money. Nevertheless, I’m not much successful in placing adult cats, as most of them were maltreated, are distrustful of strangers or are of advanced age. Most of them are likely to stay with me forever. My thanks to Ms Andrea Hazuchová for virtual adoption of cat Vally, who was mutilated in a trap. Since the beginning of 2003 by the end of 2011 I have found new homes for altogether 144 cats including kittens and had 119 female and male cats spayed/neutered. My work with cats is no fun – it means a lot of time, problems, traveling etc. Last year, for example, one day I rode my bike over 90 km in a oner in searching for prospective cat owners. The daily preparation of more than 30 bowls takes about 2 hours, etc. When I am planning neutering a “tough” cat, I have to get a room 1-2 days before the surgery, then catch him or her after a hard fight and cram them into the crate; in addition, I must arrange for transport to Kopřivnice and then there is another fight in the vet surgery room to pull the cat out of the crate. When we come back I leave the patient inside and spend with the cat 4-6 hours till the effect of tranquilizer passes. Only after a week I can again let the cat out to the district and feed him/her daily. And then there are ilnesses and injuries of cats. Sometimes I ask myself whether I should not be awarded an Order from the State for my long-time activity, perhaps instead of other decorated persons. I also sometimes think of those tens of cats whose lives I have saved and of many tens of homeless kittens for whom I found new homes where they are satisfied. In my activity up to now I most appreciate: 1/ that I have prepared such living conditions for my cat pack that they are often better off than cats living in people’s homes; 2/ that after several years the thinking of some people , former cat killers in my neighbourhood, has changed, so that from being active cat enemies they became passive observers (earlier, they regularly attacked cats with stones and sticks – today, they look the other way and go away); 3/ that dog owners respect “my” area and if they walk their dogs, they keep them on leash (earlier many of them enjoyed seeing their pet dogs trying to catch a cat). Moreover, in the early days of my activity, I felt like a champion if a cat lived to the age of 5. Later on the life expectancy increased to 7 - 9 years and nowadays I have also cats who are 10 – 14 years old , which is a considerable age for shy outdoor animals. The cat streetworking is a never ending job. It is enough when a moron throws a cat with 4 kittens in a bag to the dustbin or when another idiot throws several kittens out of his/her car – and the work starts over, i.e. feeding them, providing spaying/neutering, securing a den for accommodation, and getting people interested in adoptions etc. Also enough when a skinny cat comes to our district a few days before delivery and right away, there are more of us. And it is unthinkable to me to drive a cat out who tries to pick up even the bits of food fallen out of her bowl. Please help. I urgently need to get finance for vet care and food, namely cans and dry food. If you have a tip on a cheap buy, please let me know. I am a pensioner who tries to earn money for vet care (spaying/neutering and vaccination) by doing temporary jobs, e.g. grubbing up tree stumps. Yet it is simply not enough to pay for castrations, the most needed medicaments and food for so many cats! Your help will be warmly welcomed. I can’t recall any very amusing story at the moment, although I had many experiences (unfortunately, mostly bad ones). Yet I do remember some which were rather funny, e.g.: last year, one of the „tougher“ cats before she could be neutered succeeded in demolishing the vet ambulance so thoroughly that the only one who was not harmed was the doctor, who was squeezed in the corner not daring to move till I caught the cat. Or once I had at my home a cat about one year old for several days before home was found for her. Once she saw a pigeon on the balcony and dashed for him like greased lightning without noticing that the door to the balcony was closed. Luckily she did not suffer any harm. Only the door glazing got broken. Another day in the evening dark, a cat took her 4 kittens out for a walk and strutted with them on the sidewalk. A small dog stormed out of nowhere dashing for them. In the end, the cat screaming mightily chased the dog for about 300 m down the street; people just stared – probably for the first time being witnesses to a cat chasing a dog scene. Here are the statistics of cats cared for in the shelter in 2011: cats admissions total: 22, of which 19 kittens and 3 cats; vaccinations: 18; spaying/neutering: 32, of which 22 female and 10 male cats; homes found for: 18, of which 3 cats and 15 kittens; medical treatment: 14 cats including kittens; death: euthanised: 3 cats and 1 kitten due to incurable disease. As of 1 January 2021, the deposit cared for 39 cats, of which 35 adult cats, 3 grown-up kittens and 1 small kitten. I wish to conclude by thanking all donors and the First Society for their financial help. ![]() Deposit of Mrs Miroslava Kocurová – Kočky Bohumín, Tel.: +420/739880626, e-mail:kockybohumin@volny.cz Mrs Miroslava Kocurová has cared for solitary cats for many years. She became member of the Society in summer 2008. She founded the Kočky Bohumín deposit. Thanks to Mrs Šimková she set up her own internet sites and on 17 April 2009 she obtained a Certificate of professional competence in trapping of and care for animals. She successfully co-operates with AB veterinary clinic, with joint-stock company VADS a.s. Bohumín, with 3 shop assistants of Digipoint Bohumín, who provide fodder, and with Nadace na pomoc zvířatům Ostrava Animals Support Foundation/. She provides additional fodder for wild cats at four outdoor locations and arranges for their neutering and veterinary care. She traps snuggling cats at these locations and helps them get accustomed to indoor living. She also receives homeless cats from private persons. Besides, she finds loving homes for domesticated friendly cats through ads on web sites and leaflets containing offer of cats. Besides, she presents offers of destitute cats from private persons on her web sites. In addition, she writes articles and distributes educational leaflets to family houses in the neighbourhood. She has taken care of fixing the problem of cats thrown out to garbage containers at Zlatník restaurant in Krásná municipality, namely by an accomodating agreement with Mr Lučan (Zlatník’s owner) on the provision of additional food, by delivery of a large heat insulated booth, by provision of several packages of fodder and by agreement on cats neutering in the spring – see Outdoor living cats. Meet her cats living at home and outdoors by watching TIK Bohumín broadcasting, 25 April 2009. Number of cats in her care: Cats received total: 52; vaccination: 7; neutering: 14; new homes found: 27; medical treatment: 10; deaths: 2; disappeared: 5; long-term supervision: 3. Statistics of number of cats cared for in 2011: admissions total: 105; vaccination: 6, spaying/neutering: 84, placement in homes: 59, medical treatment: 111, deaths. As of 1 January 2012 the deposit cared for altogether 60 cats including spayed/neutered cats that cannot be placed in homes due to their shyness; the shelter provides food and veterinary outdoor care for them. ![]() Deposit Žikov Anna Špačková, mobile: 604 655 057, Žikov čp. 1, 341 82 Petrovice u Sušice, e-mail: utulekzikov@seznam.cz utulekzikov@seznam.cz Č.ú.756098001/5500 Raiffeisen v. symbol 703. The deposit had to move from the area of Business Park Staré Hory, Strojírenská 4/7, 586 01 Jihlava for serious reasons in 2008 and then due to financial reasons from Jihlava to Žikov by Petrovice on 19 June 2010. Ms Fuksová obtained, on 17 April 2009, a Osvědčení of professional competence for capture and care for animals and Inspection KVS Jihlava registered her asylum under No. 61CO1786 on 12 Feb 2010 (see protocol) viz protokol. I started caring for abandoned cats by mere coincidence in 2000. Those days owner of our flat has evicted us without providing us a substitute housing and we were desperately trying to find a place to live till we found a place in pension U Chladů at Praha 5 – Zbraslav. And it was there when cats, thanks to fate or God, became inseparable part of my life. First the small tomcat of owners started visiting us and later on he moved to our place for good. The pension owners were avowed opponents of castration and because besides the tomcat they also had an unspayed female cat, there were loads of kittens 3 times a year. In the pension and its surroundings there were countless cats of various age and sex, whom their owner did not feed, whom the guests were driving out, often setting their dogs on them. At first we tried to change their behaviour towards the wretched cats yet in vain; so that we ourselves looked for new homes for the cats. Of 18 cats were succeeded in placing 12 cats; to this day, we are in contact with them and we are pleased that the cats are doing well in their new families. Placement of the remaining cats was interrupted by the sudden and devastating flood in August 2002 followed by evacuation, when it was hard to us to persuade the rescuers so we could take with us at least two kitties, who luckily spent the night with us. Unfortunately, the remaining three were nowhere to be found. I dislike recalling that horror: we lost almost everything except for those 2 cats and we had nowhere to go. So we decided to take them to the Highlands to the small family house of my parents and look for the 3 other cats. In the end we found them. They were hungry, stressed out, yet alive! After two-month treatment when they were shut in the small house, they got used to the new environment as well as to the dog of my parents. He took a great liking to them and never left them alone. I was convinced that a new happy chapter of their life began. Unfortunately, there was no happy ending. The oldest and most beloved tomcat enjoyed roaming further and further, although it is claimed that neutered tomcats do not roam. Nights without number instead of sleeping I used to walk and call him to come back. In short, from August 02 he ended up twice in traps at our neighbours‘ place, once he was knocked down by a car and a and the third time he crawled up to us after 20 days, emaciated to death; he couldn’t stand on his feet, and judging from X-ray and according to our veterinarian MVDr. Kučera, someone must have beaten him up with a metal rod. For all that, the doctor succeeded in healing him; except that for the roamer Zrzeček to gou out was a must. But finally, in his eight years of age, he learned to only stay outside in the morning till noon. Life went on quite well till May 2004, when someone donated us a „Trojan horse“. On that morning we got up at 4 a.m. as we always did, because our cats had peculiar ideas and methods how to get the two-footers out of beut. The first thing we noticed was a tied bag in the courtyard. The bag contained 6 adult cats and ten still blind kittens. All were stiffened with fear and cold. I didn’t know what to do with the present. I called an asylum, but the lady on duty dryly informed me that she was not in charge of cats. So I loaded them into my car and drove them to the vet. Of course, none of the cats were spayed and all were flea-bitten, but except for a virosis they were more or less okay. Again I turned to the asylum, yet they told me that they had only some kind of micro asylum for cats and they were not able to accept so many animals. I went home and after a small exchange with the rest of my family I decided to cancel my kitchen and use the one of my parents and I adapted the room for the „gift kitties“. After virosis was cured, the adult cats underwent spaying/neutering, the kittens were vaccinated, and that’s how my „deposit“ actually came into being. At first it took a long time for the cats to even register our presence and still longer to create a relationship to us. Some of them remained distrustful of uss up to the present time. Originally, we planned building an outdoor shelter for the shy cats. Yet Man proposes, Cat disposes. With lighning speed they always returend to the house. So I gave up and tried to find them a new home. Unfortunately, even those who were really friendly to us, the moment a stranger appeared, they started behaving like mad – thus discourageing all prospective owners. In the course of time we provided asylum to more abandoned, hungry, sick and unwanted cats. The veterinary care, spaying/neutering, vaccination and food I mostly pay from my own means and also with kind contribution from the members of my family, including the First Society. I offer the cats through offer at www.kockaapravo.cz and www.kocky-online.cz, and besides also through ads in the press and magazines. I hand them over pursuant to an Agreement on Handover of Animal. I always personally inspect conditions of care in a new home. On 19 June 2010 the depositary moved from Jihlava to Žikov by Sušice for lack of finance. Here we do not have to pay the rent, yet there is no connection to internet there as yet. We provide asylum to abandoned cats from nearby localities, adopt cats of deceased owners, and we also took 10 cats from husband and wife Chmelík from České Budějovice, who were threatened by eviction from their flat. We capture and have spayed/neutered the abandoned cats from the premises of SOLO Sušice factory and provide food for them including veterinary care. We send out educational leaflets in the neighbourhood as well as in Sušice. We organise various events, e.g. International Homeless Animals Day, and visiting day in our depositary. Invited by the Foundation for the Protection of Animals we took part in celebrations of the World Animals Day in the Central Park at the Pankrác plain (in Prague). In 2011 we received a sponsorship donation by Weber Mlýn company of Hořovice which supports our cats with permanent discounts on quality food. Ms Mgr. Pluhařová, regularly contributes to the virtual adoption of tomcat Mikeš. Husband and wife Rybín virtually adopted tomcats Zrzeček and Monty and brought 14 kg of Whiskas dry food for the cats. Our cats were given private gifts from: husband and wife Toman, Jihlava; husband and wife Krejča, Sušice; Ms Černíková, Sušice; Mr Kopačka, Posobice; Mr Boxan,Prague; Ms Janknechtová with her colleague while participating at the celebrations of the International Day of Abandoned Animals; also husband and wife Roman and Radka /… chybí family name!/ from Sušice provide us voluntary assistence. Among regular sponsors are in particular the vet doctors husband and wife Švejda, who grant us discounts on all services and products. I would like to thank them here. Statistics of cats in care in 2011: total admissions: 29; vaccinations: 29; spaying/neutering: 53; placement to homes: 17; treatment: 85 cats including kittens; deaths: 4 cats (3x FIP, 1x kidney failure). As of 1 January 2012 37 cats were in care of the depositary. Statistika počtu koček v péči v roce 2011: celkem přijatých: 29, vakcinace: 29, kastrace: 53, umístění: 17, léčba: 85 koček včetně koťat, úmrtí: 4 kočičky (3x FIP, 1x selhání ledvin). K 1. lednu 2012 bylo v péči depozita 37 koček ![]() ![]() Outdoor deposit of Mrs. Mirka Richterová - Mokropsy Five years ago four kittens squeezed through a fence to our garden in Mokropsy, their mother climbed over. I gave them food and since then they stay in our and neighboring gardens. Members of civil league Podbrdsko, who have lots of experience, came twice for the kittens and found them new permanent home. We didn´t manage to catch all of them, so five cats still stay with us, fortunately they are neutered. Since then there are no new kittens in the area. It is not possible to stay in the wooden cottage in winter, so I come here every day from Prague and bring food. Only one of the cats, edobk, allows us to caress him and particularly he loves to be scratched on his belly. Others are too shy. Last year I met two wonderful cat lovers in Mokropsy. Now I share the feeding with them. It is a big help for me, as I am almost 70 years old. Both of the ladies also have their own home deposits and their cats are regularly offered in exhibitions for homeless cats or via advertisements. One of them has a cottage on the bank of river Berounka, she is retired and has only limited financial means. She would like to repair the cottage windows to protect it better against cold and damp weather and could keep more cats inside. In our opinion homeless cats and kittens come mainly from one cat-collector in Mokropsy, who keeps several cats in her house, where they live there in bad conditions. All our attempts to improve the situation were without success until now. Since the cats started to come to our garden, there are no mice in the cottage, these wonderful animals take care of it in return. ![]() Deposit of Mrs. Květa Senarová, Rodvínov 63, 377 01 Jindřichův Hradec tel: 608 271 568, e-mail: Kveta.Senarova@email.cz As cats are in my opinion the poorest among other animals (they cannot defend themselves as a dog – who bites, horse – who kicks), I have always taken care of them. Ill, homeless and often mistreated cats come to my care and because I don’t have enough place outside, also to my house. At present I have 14 foundlings at home. They either came by themselves, or were brought by people who couldn’t take care of them. Last time I brought tom-cat Akira from vet Nesnídal. In this case it warmed my heart because he was, ill and miserable, brought by a group of 14-16 years old teenagers, from whom I wouldn’t expect it. They asked me to take him. Although I protested that I have enough cats at home, I kept him in my home. The reward is sweet, lovering tom-cat, but also appreciation of the teenage group, who tried to find new home for a kitten instead of ‘having fun’ by torturing it to death. Surely not all teenagers are wicked. All cats in my deposit are neutered. Despite of this the tom-cats express clearly that this lady belongs to them and so does the new carpet. So I am running around the house with a bucket of water and clean their marking. I take care of 9 outside living cats. I feed four of them here in the village (together with half of cats’ population in the village that also comes to eat here) and I go to five cats to Jindřichův Hradec, where I share the feeding with my colleague, also a nurse. Originally it was seven cats, unfortunately two of them didn’t come one day and God knows where they are. All of them were neutered. I think that it is one of the ways to prevent more unwanted homeless, hungry, ill cats in Jindřichův Hradec. In our village we started - together with Božena Bláhová (I will mention her deposit later) - education on advantages of neutering. Firstly we focused on cat owners, about which we know they have several cat foundlings at home. These were mostly female cats. It is known that cat can have kittens more times in a year. And what shall one do with the kittens then; they come to me or to Božena Bláhová, who tries to find new owners. We found one lady, who tried to find new home for kittens. I have to say the response was perfect. We succeeded to convince her that neutering is the only way out of the vivious circle. The owners lend us their cats and we had them neutered thanks to the FIRST SOCIETY FOR CAT RIGHTS. Last year three cats were neutered and eleven cats this year. So far we managed to do it when the cats were not gravid. We know about two other places where many kittens are born, we will try to convince the owner that he will let us catch the animals (because these are mainly feral homeless cats) and neuter them. Božena Bláhová, who helps me with cats’ charity activities, takes care of 15 cats at home. Unfortunaltelly there is railway track behind their house, which reduces the number of cats, but also dogs. As she is wife of farmer, there is always some milk available, so also the second half of the village visit them. Unfortunatelly some idiot started to bring two months old kittens to our village and leaves them in a park in the square or in Blaha family farm. Last year it was four lovely kittens, which kept together and were trying to find a home. Božena Bláhová’s children brought them home and she succeeded to find new place for them. I wish I met the man and warn him that he is committing a crime. If he had the mother-cat neutered our troubles would be over. We place the animals via advertisements in Journal Bohemia, or to our friends who will, as we know, take good care of them. It happened to me that I placed two kittens and in two weeks the owners called me that they don’t get along with their dogs and sit on a tree all day, so if I could take them back? Of course I did. In year 2006: Found: 11 cats Placed: 4 cats Died: 6 cats Neutered: 3 cats Medical treatment provided: 5 cats RNDr. Jan Dvořák Ke Hřišti 105/13, 181 00 Pha 8 – Čimice, tel. 233 556 006, e-mail: dvorakcat@seznam.cz My deposits have mainly the function of asylum places for stray cats and gathering point for left kittens and injured animals without an owner. On 28th December 2005, the date of this report, I take care of 24 cats. The animals are divided into three groups (“deposits”), which represent three different types:
From total 24 cats were 18 vaccinated, for the rest vaccination was postponed because of their health condition. All adult female cats are neutered, 3 teen-cats are planned at the end of winter. So far no official authority contributed for care by any money (except for house near the Rest House). Veterinary care is provided in Veterinary clinic Sokolniky, Trousilova 4, Praha 8 – Bohnice, where is also kept computer evidence. The clinic tries to help me by convenient prices of some operations and occasional donations of dietary cat food. In the view of the vet our cats are in very good health condition (compared with other owners). As for health problems, I am most concerned about chronical renal failure. Although clinical diets and medicaments (Fortekor) were applied, the end was fatal. So far five cats died of this desease. Other problem is injuries from fights between tom-cats – there are two cases of eye lost in accident (operated together with castration, by now doing well) and one broken front leg with permanent consequences. One tom-cat suffered from malign subcutaneous sarcom in the spot where rabbies vaccination was applied (results from histological examination), it was operated this January and the prognosis is good. Number of cats during the year: In deposit 1 (in my house) one more cat – kitten from dustbin (her name is Popelka – Cinderella, see photo). In deposit 2 – after long hard fight with chronical renal failure tom-cat Filip is gone; 3 kittens-newcommers (see photogallery). Other two kittens found home with help of Prague league for animals protection, where I am also a member. In spring young black tom-cat Mikeš came to deposit 3, and stayed here. In total 1 cat is gone, 5 cats came. I do not think of placing any of the primary cats’ community, because the animals are used to the locality and stay outside and inside as they wish. Exception is kittens brought to deposit 1 and 2, which can find new home also as indoor cats. However I keep most of the kittens and let them integrate to the original society. This year I tried to work out methodical materials on protection and care for outside living cats (see Refuges project), I didn’t manage completely what I resolved, I will do maximum in the following year. I would like to assist to the Society to gain grants also for 2006 (I hope this report may also help). I would like to thank the Society for financial help. With regards RNDr. Jan Dvořák ![]() Depozit of Mrs. Dagmar Klimentová, Na Hřiskách 199, 696 31, Bukovany u Kyjova, mobile: +420 606 463 472 I started to take care of stray cats in 1999. At present I take care of 90 cats in my own deposit and also in other deposits and localities (gardens, waste areas, building of former collective farm etc.) In total it is 48 female-cats, 18 kittens and 24 tom-cats. Adult female-cats and tom-cats are all neutered. Cats are from 2 months to 17 years old. Domestic cats live in home deposit, they use cat toilet and sleep on the couch, chairs, bed and on their cushions. Neutered feral cats live in safe environment in buildings of former farms, barns, stables or various shelters, provided with warm and dry boxes for sleeping and regular feeding. I bring the food twice a day, I give them tinned food and granules and fresh water every day. Cats and kittens are placed:
Cats that were in my care now live in several towns, eg. Brno, Praha, Příbor, Bohumín, Ostrava, Kyjov etc. A binding Agreement with sheet “Care of cats” is concluded, the new owner must agree with control and in case he or she cannot or doesn’t want to take care of the cat any more, must return the animal to me. I make the checks personally and by telephone. In year 2006:
I would like to thank the Society for provided financial help. Best regards Dagmar Klimentová
Marie BRÁZDILOVÁ, Naďa TOMALOVÁ, HODONÍN (January 2005) Motto: Activities for saving cats are most effective when abandoned cats become healthy again and find a loving family in order to make us be able to help other abandoned cats! We still continue with spaying of the outside cats – shy ones that are after castration put back to the their original localities and snuggling ones that are being healed, cleared off the parasites and put into the home deposit in order to looking for a new home for them: advertisements at the web pages, personal offer and presentation at the cat show (in Prague, i.e. 300 km).
We help socially deprived and old people who care for abandoned cats but do not dispose of financial means for castration. We care successfully for education concerning information about castrations by informational bulletin boards located in shopping centers and by posting up the posters but unfortunately we are not successful in ![]() January 2005 ![]() ![]() February 2005 - After long and unsuccessful effort at first we managed to catch and neuter 2 cats that had been living in housing estate, both are already in their new homes. - We started taking care of one snuggling adult cat that was chucked out and crouching in the snowy hospital garden. He became a great darling and already found his new family (according to their information he became a sovereign boss of all family) at our cat show in Prague. - In the same garden there appeared a half-wild cat – he was getting thinner, clawing himself and plucking his hair. Veterinarian helped us by antiallergic injection and anti –flea treatment. ![]() ![]() - One of our feeder Hana reported that in the area „U cukrárny“ there appeared a new boarder – very slim, evidently ill and opened to smoothing. We could not leave him there so we took him to the veterinarian office. He needed mainly antibiotics and to be neutered because of marking his territory in the deposit. Unfortunately he was not able to wait in the cage, he bit his way out but when we caught him on his way he bit the father of our veterinarian. Because of this reason he could not be taken to the cat show to Prague. He is off his luck from now on – even through he found a new family around, the care was not sufficient and we had to take him back to our deposit. He is still waiting for appropriate home. ![]() March 2005 - In the brick factory we caught 2 cats through the resistance of gatekeeper with his dog: Máňa and her daughter Mánička, they were neutered and subsequently put back into the original locality. There is a woman looking after them while at our place during the recovery after the surgery they refused to eat and it would be impossible to find a new home for them. - In the hospital garden our known neutered cat Mikeška became seriously ill of pneumonia. We took her at our place and carrying daily to get the injections. Healed and happy she came back to the original locality that she did not want to change for our small deposit. - 2 kittens saved from the container for paper pressing in autumn were neutered. Both found a loving home directly at the sister of Naďa Tomalová´s place. - We were contacted by MVDr. Jůzová if we can take a cat with a fracture of a thighbone after a car accident that had been saved by some people who paid for the first treatment but could not take him. We ordered the surgery at the veterinarian office of MVDr. Šimek in Senice, Slovakia, so the cat Vašík had to have also the travel documents. Surgery was for 4.000,-CZK + the journey for 400, - CZK. For the present Vašík can not be offered, because the treatment has not been finished yet (2nd control X-ray left), but regarding how he is moving it seems our dooryard is too small. ![]() ![]() April 2005 - We received a phone call from a granddaughter of a departed owner of a cat who was asking us for help. Except that she is pregnant, she also owns a great dog that is attacking Mates and no one else wants to look after him. Mates is spayed, his photo and description is published on the internet and in the newspaper, but for the present there is no success. The cat is much stressed and urgently looking for a loving home. ![]() - An owner of 3 cats found another stray, neutered and very snuggling cat the colony named Finské domky. He was checked by veterinarian and we tried to find the original owner. Now he is living with a nice and young owner. - In the evening someone threw a seven months old white tabby across the fence directly into our garden. She was very tired and hungry; she was sleeping for 3 days nonstop. After neutering she found a loving home at the cat show in Prague because of her snuggling character. - We were advised to visit the colony named Nesyt located at the former farm, c. 3 km from Hodonín. In the houses without sanitary facility there live entirely the people of socially deprived groups. Nevertheless exactly these people are willing to look after found and abandoned animals even through they have no financial means for veterinary care. We were happy to help more families – for example we pay for the castration of 6 cats, for the treatment of the ear scab, just one very ill cat Johanka had to stay in our deposit. We were trying to help the cat with an injured leg, but according to the veterinarian it was an irrevocable nerve failure. So she is living there with handicap but in a loving family! - April 4 we participated in Spring cat show of the abandoned cats that had been arranged by kocky-online and OS podbrdsko in Prague and we managed to find the families for all 10 offered cats.
May 2005 - We received ask for help from the Metropolitan police and the workers in the kindergarten to catch and take the cat that was trying to get inside for 14 days. We recognized that for the whole time no one fed her or tried to call us earlier. They did not give us any answer when they saw our surprised face. Healthy Amálka is after the treatment of ear scab, vaccination and castration and she is waiting for some kind owner. - One lady living in the housing estate Za radnicí phoned us she had found two cats and asked us for help with a castration. She was willing to become their new owner. We helped so the cats now have a new wonderful home. - Next owner of one cat called us that she was feeding an outside snuggling cat but she felt fear for her. We ensured the castration of the hairy cat, veterinarian gave us antibiotics and finally we persuaded the woman to become her new owner and to keep an eye on her recovery. - May 15 we took part in 18th cat show of the abandoned cats that had been arranged by PSOZ in Prague and we managed to find the families for 3 cats. The lady that was looking after the cat Ziky from April (Ziky found an owner at a cat show in Prague) brought us another foundling. We paid for the castration, treatment of ear scab and anti-flea cure and because of our deposits were absolutely full before next cat show, the lady offered us to look after the cat till the cat show took place. At the show the cat successfully found a loving family. June 2005 - The story of an injured cat from the parking of Čapek brothers that was announced by the firefighters ended sadly. We took the cat immediately to the veterinarian office, but her condition was hopeless, head and jawbone injury was not curable. - A doctor from the hospital called Ms. Tomalová´s attention to „non given superfluous kitten“ that is gong to be drowned by one of the nurses. We adopted the kitten immediately of course.
July 2005 - We received a pitiful two months old cat Drobinka from the housing estate and presently 3 abandoned two months old kittens (Albínek, Sisinka and Nácíček) from the spa area. Other members come into our overfull deposits were: two months old cat Barvínek saved from the construction area, three months old cat Lola that was found in the shoe factory, two months old cat Šmoulinka that was begging for food at hairdressers’ and three months old cat Matýsek that had been left in the garden at the edge of the town.
August 2005 - We have been given a totally enervate two months cat Fifipírko from the barrage of Morava river, then two years old tricolor cat Minda, probably Lola’s mother who was living rough near the shoe factory. Then two and half months old Belinka that was found by local people together with another kitten next to the door of the apartment house, unfortunately a second kitten was driven over by a car. Another was four months old cat Bublinka saved in the village that had been tormented by the children.
September 2005 - Another amount of foundlings and abandoned cats, first we have been given two months old cat Eda that was hidden in the car engine at the housing estate and totally flea-bitten, then we caught three abandoned and totally enervate six months kittens Rozinka, Artur and Oskar in the gardens. Then five weeks old hungry, tormented and dock-tailed Rozárka that was found by our veterinarian on a walk in the vineyard and two years old, horribly flea-bitten Bleška that was brought by one old lady who had to pass a long term treatment in the hospital and could not look after her. - September 9 we took part in 19th cat show of the abandoned cats that had been arranged by PSOZ in Prague and 2 cats found there their new homes. Then we managed to find a home for 10 kittens, but the amount of abandoned kittens is still increasing and early in autumn we had to catch 10 shy cats and let them to be castrated to prevent from kitten.
This is the end of this year’s report about the activities of a member base of the First Society for the Cat Rights in Hodonín, report about the guardian angels of cats in Hodonín, Ms. Marie Brázdilová and Ms. Naděžda Tomalová. Thanks to their self-sacrifice we managed to save 54 abandoned cats and kittens of which 33 animals found a loving home, 43 animals were vaccinated and castrated of which 5 animals had to be put back into the original localities because of their shyness and impossibility to domesticate and we ensure their feeding. 5 animals had to be made sleepy forever because of their incurable illnesses. BRAVO, we thank you, if only there were more people like you. Conclusion: We would like to repeat the motto, i.e. activities for saving cats are most effective when abandoned cats become healthy again and find a loving family in order to make us be able to help other abandoned cats. Sometimes we suffer from remorse that either residents or newcomers do not feel comfortable as they could somewhere where a stable hierarchy of animals is. It is complicated both physically and psychically for us and for animals. You have to give a cat that you healed and that you love – it is very difficult. It never becomes a habit for us. But yet we still go on. Marie BRÁZDILOVÁ, Naďa TOMALOVÁ, HODONÍN |
