Articles of the First Society for the Cat Rights 4. května 2001, Editors
Article 1 Name and residence Civic association First Society for the Cat Rights (thereinafter “Society”) resides at an address Na Bluku 431, 252 28 Černošice. Czech equivalent of the name is “První Společnost za Práva Koček”. Article 2 Mission and objectives The Society is nationwide, non-political, unreligious, edifying organisation that aims at improving the ethical relations of men and cats, and associates people sympathising with its mission, ideas and objectives. The Society comes out of the idea of cats as unique and noble species, which exist since Miocene. With their elegant beauty the cats inspire artists and with their tender attachment and unpretentiousness they became the most widespread pets of recent human society. The Society’s mission is to improve peoples´ responsibility, respect and care for cats. The aim is to reinforce preventive and legislative arrangements with the goal to prevent cats abuse, uncontrollable reproduction, deprivation of numerous cat population and cruelty committed on cats. Article 3 Activities The Society tries to achieve the goals by means of educational activities and practical activities of the members. To improve widespread general point of view on cats, the Society holds exhibitions, benefit performances, auctions, concerts, lectures and seminars, issues publications, etc. The Society also supports, founds and runs shelters and microasylums for abandoned animals. The Society contacts prominent artists with an appeal for donation in form of their works, which are sold and the gain is afterwards used to support shelters and microasylums for abandoned cats, or to support elderly and indigent people caring of cats. Article 4 Membership A member of the Society may be any person who loves cats, who identifies with the Society’s ideas, mission and objectives and is ready to participate in their implementation; regardless of age, nationality, religion and political orientation. A membership originates from an approval of an application by the Society Board. A member is obliged to treat non-violently all living creatures, to abide these articles, to abide a Codex of Cats´ Rights, to pay annual membership fee, and participate on the Society’s activities according to individual possibilities. A member has a right to be informed about the Society’s activities and management, to be invited to Society’s happenings, to receive printed materials published for members, and participate on the Society’s activities. A collective member of the Society may be also a legal person with whom a collective membership contract was concluded. The contract must be agreed by a two-third majority of the Society Board. A honorary membership may be awarded by the Society Board, honorary members are not obliged to pay annual tributes. A membership ceases by death of a member, by absenting from the Society, by determination of a legal person or determination of the Society. Article 5 Organisation Structure 5.1 Assembly An Assembly is called together by the Society’s Board, decisions are made by the absolute majority and the quorum is absolute majority of members. Competence of the Assembly is: to alternate the Articles, to decide about memberships in the Society in likewise specialised Czech or foreign organisations, to vote and suspend members of the Board: a chairman, a vice-chairman, a treasurer etc., to decide about founding and liquidating branches, to establish and suspend an inspector and inspection commission, to validate costing of the Society’s Board, to set the amount of membership fees, to confirm annual reports on management and activities of the Society. 5.2 Society Board 1. The Society Board represents the Society, runs and coordinates its agency. It attends to all affairs that are not in competence of the Assembly or the branches. It decides about disputes in competencies. The Board is composed of a chairman, a vice-chairman and treasurer, in case of a need of another person – e.g. happening (meeting) coordinators. The chairman is entitled to act on behalf of the Society, and a vice-chairman in case of chairman’s absence. The Board assembles minimum once per three months. 2. A treasurer runs the economy of the Board and has full responsibility for it. Article 6 Sources of income and economy An income of the Society comprises of membership fees, donations and purpose-built grants, grants for supporting of educational activities of the organisation, and proceeds from actions, exhibitions, auctions, concerts, benefit performances etc. An income of the Society is intended for securing a care of unwanted cats and ensuring a fulfilment of Society’s objectives. Article 7 Form of property composition in case of determination of the Society Cessation is approved by the Assembly. In case of cessation the Assembly appoints a surveyor or commission that is to solve all property issues. Residual property is committed to a non-profit organisation with goals similar to goals of the Society. Article 8 Codex of the Cats´ Rights Preamble: Forasmuch as the recent ubiquitous cat differs from her fellow – prehistoric Miocene sabre-tooth cat – only with her lower weight and smaller canines; Forasmuch as their history – cats were an object of admiration, inspiration, fear and respect, they were worshiped as gods, and afterwards in medieval times they were persecuted and burnt on balefires as witches; Forasmuch as this mysterious, magical and withal domesticated little creature treats the “lord of creation“ once ignoring him, once worshipping him; Forasmuch as the elegance and beauty of gesture and coat, the charming attraction of all cats – an eternal inspiration of artists; Forasmuch as cats´ ever-increasing popularity as the most ideal, fancy and available house pets; Forasmuch as the meaningful existence of these mysterious and gorgeous animals that keep their large-mindedness and independence on man in spite of every influences of deforming civilisation; Forasmuch as these aspects, we must highly respect cats and protect them against suffering and distress. We must stop these beautiful animals being poisoned as rat, shot as vermin, mishandled as vulnerable toys. Cats Rights
